چکیده

(1) (a) Positional Preservation: Underlying phonological material can resist neutralization at the left edge of a constituent, but not at the right edge. (Trubetzkoy 1939:228ff, Casali 1997, Beckman 1998) (b) Iambic Footing Asymmetry: Iambic feet are almost always parsed from left to right − not rightto-left. e.g. [(σσ")(σσ")σ], *[σ(σσ")(σσ")]. (Hayes 1985, 1995) (c) Prefix-Suffix Asymmetry: Attachment of morphemes to the left edge of roots − i.e. prefixation − is marked: while every non-isolating language has suffixes, not every language has prefixes. (Greenberg 1957, Hawkins & Gilligan 1988)

Directional Asymmetries in the Morphology and Phonology of Words, with Special Reference to Bantu

This paper is concerned with two types of word-level asymmetries and their interaction: leftright asymmetries and stem-word asymmetries. Two left-right asymmetries are examined from a wide range of languages, one morphological (the predominance of suffixation over prefixation), one phonological (the preference for anticipatory over perseverative phonology). Since phonological processes are ofte...

Semantic asymmetries are modulated by phonological asymmetries: evidence from the disambiguation of homophonic versus heterophonic homographs.

The present study investigated cerebral asymmetries in accessing multiple meanings of two types of homographs: homophonic homographs (e.g., bank) and heterophonic homographs (e.g., tear). Participants read homographs preceded by either a biasing or a non-biasing sentential context and performed a lexical decision on lateralized targets presented 150 ms after onset of the sentence-final ambiguou...

Cat.Jour.Ling. 4 001-252

This fourth volume of Catalan Journal of Linguistics is devoted to a topic discussed at length in the literature but which nevertheless remains a challenge for any view of phonology: the morphology-phonology interaction. The papers collected address two related issues, the role of morphological information in phonology and the role of phonological information in morphology. The first six articl...

Production/comprehension Asymmetries in Language Acquisition

The theme of this Special Issue is asymmetries in language acquisition, and the contributions present evidence for either the presence or the absence of a production/comprehension asymmetry in child language. The authors focus on various areas of linguistics, ranging from phonology and syntax to semantics and pragmatics, using a variety of empirical methods. Although the contributions do not ag...

The diachrony of Mapudungun stress assignment

Stress assignment is one of the most widely-known and controversial aspects of present-day Mapudungun (aka Araucanian) phonology. Here, the diachrony of the phenomenon is explored based on the available written record spanning 1606–1936. Having surveyed these sparse but suggestive data, and contrasted them with present-day evidence, we suggest four distinct stages of development. Ultimately, we...
